When you went to Schoolies with your knowledge of Schoolies, was it anything like you expected it to be? Why?
Probably better than I expected.. I was expecting big brawls, alot of ******s and a fair bit of drugs.. didn't really come accross much of it.. except the drugs, but had the time of my life there.

Did the media have an affect on the decisions you and/or your family made on whether or not to participate in Schoolies?

Ehh don't think so

In 2005, the media has portrayed mostly a negative view on Schoolies. Words such as violent, out of control, fights, bashings, rape, drugs, alcohol abuse and public nuisance were frequently used throughout the media.

Do you believe that this is a fair portrayal of Schoolies? Why or why not?
Nope, it's nothing like that at all, yes theres ALOT of alcohol use, a bit of drug use but the violence and rap doesn't happen as much as you'd expect it to, it's blown right out or proportion by the media.

“The whole thing is a bloody disgrace, Schoolies must stop” DJ John Miller.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?
Disagree, it's the best time to party, we need to celebrate our achievement of completing yr 12, and it gives people the time of their lifes!

Do you have any further comments to make on Schoolies, or the media’s portrayal of Schoolies? OR any suggestions about this questionnaire or my Project that you would like to mention? Thank you for your time!!!!
Na, good luck with it though.

Something blown out of proportion but alltogetehr not too bad, certainly didnt go fire and brimstone on our collective asses The media did portray it slightly negatively but there were thing about how friendly it was etc.

In 2005, the media has portrayed mostly a negative view on Schoolies. Words such as violent, out of control, fights, bashings, rape, drugs, alcohol abuse and public nuisance were frequently used throughout the media.

Maybe overused but they all did happen, None of it was made up

Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?
Ridiculous, The guy obviously is still upset no one invited him when he finished school, we're celebrating the fact we finished at least 12 years of school and one last celebration before we join the real world and have to get real jobs, something this guy doesnt have!

Do you have any further comments to make on Schoolies, or the media’s portrayal of Schoolies? OR any suggestions about this questionnaire or my Project that you would like to mention? Thank you for your time!!!!
I dont think the media affects peoples views on it all that much, most adults i talked to before going (e.g. friends of parents etc.) all just recounted there schoolies and said have fun, i think the media really only affects a small proportion!

Very well written survey. We get a lot of questions from students doing assignments on Schoolies - this is the type of stuff we are interested in supporting, well done and hope you get great marks for your assessment.

Thanks to those who replied to this well thought out survey, please keep the replies coming.

When you went to Schoolies with your knowledge of Schoolies, was it anything like you expected it to be? Why?
i thought originally that people were giving it too much hype. and a lot of people were saying it was one big drunken orgy, but that was all bullcrap, but the hype was true, it was the best week of my life.

Did the media have an affect on the decisions you and/or your family made on whether or not to participate in Schoolies?

Yes, it had a lot of influence in my decision on Schoolies.

No, it had no affect on my decision at all.

Did the media affect the way in which your “Schoolies” event was portrayed? If so, was it a positive or negative portrayal of your time at Schoolies?
there wasnt too much about what happened in Byron, most attention is focused on GC

In 2005, the media has portrayed mostly a negative view on Schoolies. Words such as violent, out of control, fights, bashings, rape, drugs, alcohol abuse and public nuisance were frequently used throughout the media.

Do you believe that this is a fair portrayal of Schoolies? Why or why not?
it doesnt matter where you go, or when, there are bashings, rape, drugs etc everyday, everywhere, but just during schooleis the media hype it up more then needed, out of the 50,000+ schoolies at gc, there are only 2% that do stupid and irresponcible things, and it ends up those people were toolies. so in short, not its not a fair portrayal

“The whole thing is a bloody disgrace, Schoolies must stop” DJ John Miller.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?
i disagree, after having 12 straight years of schooling, i think that school leavers of that year deserve a week of relaxation, and partying freely, most problems that occur during schoolies are from non-school leavers. i think that there should be more education in schools, or atleast a small brochure or lecture, forcing the saftey factors/risks when at schoolies, or check out the schoolies survival guide here on schoolies.org.au

Do you have any further comments to make on Schoolies, or the media’s portrayal of Schoolies? OR any suggestions about this questionnaire or my Project that you would like to mention? Thank you for your time!!!!
media doesnt affect people choice to much, i think all it does is increases parents anxienty becuase of the risks when going, good luck with the SAC assignment

When you went to Schoolies with your knowledge of Schoolies, was it anything like you expected it to be? Why?
Schoolies for me was one of the best weeks in my life. I had an excellent time but as I was 17 our parties were mostly contained to within our apartment. Security back then was nothing compared to what it is now, so we would have 40 or 50 people come up to our apartment every night. Now, as a Police Officer who has worked at schoolies since 2005, I see things in a very different light. I have seen enough tragedy and horrific events to last a lifetime, and I now urge all schoolies 2009 visitors to be very wary of the dangers that present themselves.

Did the media have an affect on the decisions you and/or your family made on whether or not to participate in Schoolies?

Yes, it had a lot of influence in my decision on Schoolies.
It had a some affect on my decision
No, it mainly had an affect on my families views on SchooliesNo, it had no affect on my decision at all.

Did the media affect the way in which your “Schoolies” event was portrayed? If so, was it a positive or negative portrayal of your time at Schoolies?

The media always spends the entire week trying their best to give schoolies a bad name. They will actually pay people to start fake fights for the camera, and as police officers we just see a mass of people and have no idea that it is a staged fight, so the media ends up getting us on camera too and giving us a bad name. Do NOT believe what you see on television

Of course, with almost 50,000 drunk teenagers crammed into a small section of Surfers Paradise, the likelihood of a fight breaking out is extremely high. However, in the last 3 years, it has been found that more than 80% of the people arrested during schoolies for fighting, drinking in public and other disturbance related offences, have been older people in their 20s, who had nothing to do with the actual schoolies event.

“The whole thing is a bloody disgrace, Schoolies must stop” DJ John Miller.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?

DJ John Miller is an idiot. I disagree with his statement as 99% of all schoolies visitors will simply have a great time and enjoy themselves, without causing any trouble. Only 1% of schoolies will be arrested, like I said before it is the general public coming out of the clubs that cause the trouble.

Do you have any further comments to make on Schoolies, or the media’s portrayal of Schoolies? OR any suggestions about this questionnaire or my Project that you would like to mention? Thank you for your time!!!!

I think your project is an excellent study and you should strive to find out the truth about the schoolies event and let people know what really goes on. This year, many police including myself will be equipped with a small camera attached to their clothing, to enable us to show what really goes on, and alleviate the problems with people making false accusations against us
