I haven't really taken much notice of schoolies week here - for us locals the schoolies are an economically essential nuisance. But we're doing schoolies week for tourism at school, so I'll see if I can get you some more information. We get a lot of schoolies here, so accommodation will probably be a pain if you haven't booked early. As someone said earlier, the real estate agents are probably the best place to ask, as there are many holiday rentals available down here.

How anything at schoolies week will go down depends upon the individual. There have been major controversies down here every year after schoolies, and it can go on all year. Opinions tend to be polarised, and to some extent, it depends on people's previous experience of schoolies. There are some people who will never be happy about schoolies being held in Victor, regardless of what changes are made, or what is said. This poll is from this week's local paper:

Should a public meeting be held to discuss Schoolies Week celebrations on the South Coast?
RESULTS

Yes. It is important that the public has a say on improvements. 62.1%
No. It won't matter what we say, it will be the same. 12.1%
No. The public's representatives are doing a good job already. 25.9%

Public meetings have been held in the past, so the issue ought to be a dead horse. Unfortunately, every year at least one plate glass window gets broken by idiots, which supplies the anti-schoolies lobby with fuel. Most people, however, were young at some time in their lives, and so you're welcome with the vast majority. You'll just have to try to avoid the crabby ones.

As for accomodation, it's all booked out long before schoolies begins, if you don't have a place booked you'd have to be super-lucky to get one late. If the only place you can get is in Port Elliot, Middleton or Goolwa, last year there were free buses running between Goolwa and Victor Harbor for schoolies, picking up people from the other two places on the way. I think you would need an orange band to get on them, there are heaps of people many years past schoolies age who hang around and try to get in on the action. There are a number of caravan parks, but they're all expensive.

A lot of people sleep in their cars in the Woolworths and BiLo car parks, but I don't know whether that will be cool this year. In past years, the police have left them alone because they figured they were safe where they were, but some of the anti-schoolies people have raised objections on the grounds that it's unsanitary. OK...Bilo doesn't have toilets the public can use, but there are nice clean toilets in the arcade where Woolworths is, and Woolies opens at 7.00 AM, so you can go then. If the antis see you peeing in the bushes at the edge of the car park it might spoil things for next year's schoolies. Sleeping in the car is a reasonable option for some people. Of course, there are lots of other places where you can park a car, but out-of-the-way places might not be safe

Is it me or don't the Adelaide School Leavers even consider the Gold Coast,Phuket,Penang,Bali or even Australian Contiki Tours for the people who will be 18 by the time Schoolies rolls around?I for one would like Someone to start a New Trend and do something different for Schoolies.
